Drinking is too risky for a gardener

He pulls a flask from under his jacket, uncaps it and drinks. He holds it out to me.

"No, thank you." I have never been much of a drinker. The one time I did imbibe too much, at a Royal Horticultural function put on by the Narcissus and Tulip Commitee, I became very sincere. Too sincere. I sat beside an elderly couple and rhapsodized about spring flowers. I think I might have quoted Wordsworth.
(Helen Humphreys, The Lost Garden)

-----------------------------------------------

without drinking, get in touch within yourself with an experience of pure rapture and identification with an animal, a flower, a season or a leaf and share it with someone you know. you may just talk about it or you may write a poem, take a picture, draw a sketch relating to your experience and share it.

"No, grazie."

gardens of the mind

no matter how beautiful a garden in terms of location, design, soft and hard landscaping features and plants thriving there, what you bring home is a feeling of the way you were welcomed there.

to be... a garden

Se fossi un giardino...

Quale sarebbe il mio primo pensiero?
...e oggi dove fiorisco?

Quale sarebbe la mia indole?
Generosa

Come amerei passare il tempo?
Trasformandomi

Cosa migliorerei negli esseri umani?
La loro volontà di dominio sulla natura

Quale insegnamento vorrei trasmettere agli esseri umani?

If I were a garden...

what would be my first thought?
where am i going to bloom today?

what would be my nature?
generous.

how would i spend my time?
transforming myself.

what would move me?
the smile of a human being; a girl walking barefoot over me in the morning dew; a man bending over a tree, crying.

what would be my gift to Planet Earth?
beauty, my unique way of catching light.

what would the world miss if i did not exist?
my bounderies; on more possibility for human beings to access the Realm of Harmony.

what would you like of human beings?
their respect.

how would you like human beings better?
less obsessed by their struggle over nature.
what would would be your teachings to human beings? take care of yourselves by taking care of me. let go the idea of "orderlyness"  at all costs: a little mess is vital, let it come out and be!

gardens bring people together

Culpeper Community Garden is a well established and beautifully run public park and environmental community project in the very heart of Islington, London.

Culpeper is an organic garden with a rich and varied array of plants. Trees, shrubs and a wealth of herbaceous perennials and all kinds of herbs and seasonal vegetables grow on the plots.

Tending the garden is a communal effort by garden members and volunteers. Though the garden is divided up into plots for each resident gardener to grow his/her own piece of land, vegetation flows quite naturally from one plot to the other, turning from more ornamental to more productive ones without one really noticing, thanks to some common rules, a sound management and a shared feeling about what the garden is about.

During my visit there I was welcomed by one of the head gardeners who introduced me to the philosophy of place. Managed by and for local people this garden is "90% about the people, and 10% about the gardening". And i did meet people of all ages and countries of origin, gardeners, clerks during there lunch break, a homeless, mothers and their kids.

The garden has quite a casual feel about it. A sound foundation design is the perfect set for the vegetation to take the scene. Casual as the plantings may seem, there are some spots, corners, views where you find brilliant combinations of plants and an impeccable sense for colour, form and scale, granting an overall sense of unity and beauty. Great job!

Ottimo lavoro!

my garden

my garden's site is not on the top of a hill, nor is it by a brook or a wooded land to be found.

my garden sits on top of a block of flats in a modern town, i have seen more pleasant sites and gardens more refined.

if any garden is granted with rest and harmony, there is a constant noise in mine from cars and coaches passing by.

and yet, by heavens, my garden is more true and full of gifts than one of those posh retreats on glossy magazines.

------------------------------
