getting in touch with the river

when i first launched this blog i was sure that only the best things, the most reassuring experiences would make their way here. now i know it is not so. there are dark areas that i need to go through.

last February, 23rd... a phone call, someone told me that a wave of petrol and oil flowed into river Lambro... we would later learn that this oil and petrol was supposedly... inexistent...

we all know that the river Lambro is awfully polluted right a few miles below its spring until it gets mortally so after collecting all kinds of waste materials from the industrial sites of the rich Brianza. this is no news. so why do we choose not think about it? why do we feign surprised?

we've been exploiting our hills, our valleys, our rivers, our fertile land as if they meant nothing, and yet they are being so generous towards us...

last week we went to visit the river. we went to pay a visit there as we do with an old friend or a relative we haven't seen in a while and have heard of being ill.

siamo andati a trovarlo a Monza praticamente all'altezza dove è avventuto l'avvelenamento di un mese fa. c'era qualcosa di spettrale nell'aria oltre all'odore acre che emana dal fiume come di detersivo...

we went to visit the river in Monza more or less where the poisoning took place one month ago. something eery struck us in the air as well as a terrible smell coming from the river as of detergents...

questo è il punto.

this is the spot.

what do you do when confronted with death? with a patient, a distant relative, that looks deadly sick? you take a deep breath, you centre yourself in a place where some comfort can be found and offered.

questo è quanto abbiamo fatto.

that's what we did.

and how do you say goodbye to someone in such a state? you want to believe that your visit meant something... that half smile, that fleeting serenity in its eyes... that was its way to say thanks...

and so we rejoiced when we noticed that a couple of birds stayed with us, flying and chasing each other over our heads, throughout our little cerimony of healing, acknowledging, thanksgiving and greeting of the river.

and when we left the sky smiled unto us.

the Na'vi People

there
is a chance that the tale we're shown in Avatar is pointing to a path that sooner or later each one of us will walk.

Avatar is the story of our personal reconnection to our own state of unity. Pandora, the Na'vi People, the occupation task forces are all to be found within ourselves. as are the wild and tamed animals, and the hero and his heroine.

the process of
step-by-step acknowledgement of one's original state of inner balance is shown thoughout the film. a dynamic and harmonious state of our different parts with one another and with us.

in order to get in touch with such a dimension we have to cultivate silence and peacefulness.
Grace jokingly warns Jake before sending him to his journey "relax and let your mind go blank..." otherwise we will just get in trouble. strange animals, eerie beast half vipers half wolves will chase us. then our intuitive part may turn up and reproachfully address us - "you are like a baby, making noise, you don't know what to do..." - she instead, Neytiri, moves swiftly at her ease around here and will be one of our allies if we choose to honour her.

exploring and acknowledging this domain is an act of will taking place in a fully conscious and awaken state and yet the senses and faculties with which we are operating, though ours, are seldom used and we need to train them in order to gradually master them.

at one point Grace is chasing Jake with coffe and microwaved eggs
"eat them, you need to take care of this body..." the film shows how vital it is, throughout the whole process, not to lose touch with that everyday life part of us we consider "ordinary" and which is the starting point of our expeditions. we must care for it, for it is this part in fact that we are exploring with new tools and a fresh point of view.

we will have to learn how to walk first and we will have to confront our beasts, win our fear of waters, protect ourselves with fire and meet our intuitive part and her ascendants to become allies with them. connect with the earthly forces of a horse and then, after proving a perfect balance through killing for food - "a clean death, you are ready..." - tame the winged animal in order to connect with the air currents.

throughout this process those ego oriented parts of us - colonel Miles Quaritch in the film - that do care about the vehicle through - and within - which we make our expeditions will become alert and immediately feel undermined and in danger of losing their control over us. they will fight with all their strength against our awakening to that land of quiet and beauty, Pandora, that dwells within ourselves and of which we are the righteous dwellers.

in order to prevent an unecessary slaughter, it's always best to avoid direct contrast and proceed gradually in the work. this is, in fact, a peaceful conquest.

[...]
it shelters you from cold and it is a good substitute for chicken eggs for all its benefits [...]
an obscure sentence then, followed by two words: green and water
then again an uncomprehensible word that might be a conjunction followed by word which is impossible to read...

lo, we have been taught the language of birds, and all blessings have been bestowed upon us (Quran, 27:16)

sotto sopra - upside down

e voi come vi sentite?

Wintertime is the right season to experience something about the the balancing forces that guide a tree in its development. and to allow the bare image of its form within ourselves. observe the light climing up the trunk and spreading among the branches up to where it fades away through its twigs.

form betrays the spirit standing behind the species and tells us something about the single individual, up to unexpected details at times: how big it was when it was planted - was it planted or is it wild?, in which conditions it has been living, troubles it went through, in which way it overcame them... the gift it has in store for us and what we can give or do in return for them! ;-)

-------------------------------------------------------

to start getting acquainted with the forms of trees i invite you to participate in a simple exercise. you can try it with kids too. stand enough far away from your chosen friend tree in order to catch sight of the whole of it at a glance.

now, you can savour it. let it pervade your sight 'til you can catch its coherence and intrinsic harmony within yourself. quietly enjoy such sight and slowly become aware that what you're watchig is roughly a half only of your tree, likely less than a half.

there's another tree in fact that lies invisible to our sight right underneath the one we can see. it is its reversed image, its double. slowly try and picture this upside down tree made of your giant tree's roots. a plant's root system, provided enough room to extend, covers a surface that is comparable to that of its canopy and reaches a depth that is proportionate to the plant's height and branching. try and make an image of it as clear as possible, rich of accurate details, feel it as lively and luscious as the upper part of the tree.

and now be aware of what comes out of the integration of two such realities: the upper tree and the lower tree. be sure this is not about fantasizing: the tree that you are observing is one being with its root system, providing it with nourishing and getting anchoring, water and nutrients from it.

and just how are you feeling now?

soul experiences

(C) All rights reserved Buster Ken

there's always something i want to find a reason for. yet there are some experiences i have learnt to accept as they come and not question.

i call them soul experiences. i don't necessarily look for them, they happen. i recognize them because then i'm into a different time and space. it feels silent there, even if people and traffic are bursting around me, it feels like i can hear the sound of a leaf falling onto the ground. and time opens up. it spreads out in all directions and allows me to be. there and there, being.

now, you don't have to think about something extraordinary or miraculous or that i go around floating on the air, quite the opposite really. i feel grounded and perfectly there where i am, everything looks crispy and alive, the air i'm breathing in and out is sweet, what i touch responds to all of my senses as all of my senses respond to what is around me. it's like being alert without being afraid.

it's very much like being in love with all that meets you.

---------------------------------------------------------------

now, this is an experiential blog, i'm talking about experiences here. so i'd love you to try. to be open and alert. not to wish or wait for anything to happen. just be open and aware.

you can experience this while going to the baker's, while biking to school, while sitting in an underground train. if you try and turn anything you're doing into a kind of ritual you may experience it. allow yourself to be relaxed and free from your usual preoccupations, allow your breath to calm down and listen to your heart for a while.

then do something: go on doing what you were doing; get up and go out, whatever you wish - yet do it from your heart, starting from your heart... and going back to your heart. see what happens, you may be surprised.
