welcoming people and wildlife alike

Now, would you guess this was shot in central London within striking distance of St. Pancras Station? well, that's exactly the spot! Camley Street Natural Park lies in the middle of King's Cross. Born on the site of a coal yard back in 1984, it is listed today as one Local Nature Reserve.

Visiting there this year in May I was delighted by walking through an undergrowth of cow parsley in the wood and realizing what can be done to reintroduce nature in our towns and welcome people and wildlife alike a in public park.

Chi lo direbbe che ho scattato questa foto in piena città a Londra a uno sputo dalla Stazione di St Pancras? eppure, sta proprio lì. Il Camley Street Natural Park si trova nel bel mezzo di King's Cross. Nato sui resti di un deposito di carbone nel 1984, è oggi inserito fra le Riserve Naturali Locali della metropli.

Ho visitato questo giardino a maggio quest'anno e ho provato il piacere di camminare in un sottobosco di cerfoglio selvatico e toccare con mano quanto è possibile fare per reintrodurre la natura nelle nostre città e invitare in un giardino pubblico allo stesso modo la gente e la flora e la fauna selvatiche.

Freschi di stagione

una mattina in compagnia di un collega a potare siepi e cespugli. e abbiamo costatato che perfino una siepe fatta esclusivamente di lauro di Trebisonda può ospitare graditi intrusi... così abbiamo raccolto un mazzo di linaiola e vitalba e salvato dal mucchio qualche rametto fiorito di veigelia.

di rientro al nostro capannone li ho messi a bagno in una ciotola di acqua fresca e, circondato di foglie e di fiori, come un improvvisato maestro fiorista nella sua bottega ho preparato queste composizioni per offrire ai miei colleghi il mio punto di vista. per condividere con loro una mia visione della bellezza. le erbacce si conquistano il posto d'onore.

Vita Sackville West amava testare le combinazioni per le sue celebri bordure accostando fiori e foglie recisi in un solo mazzetto. allora, vi invito a lasciare le tastiere dei computer e raggiungere la prima aiuola a tiro, soprattutto se vivete in città. osservate i fiori e le erbe che vi crescono spontaneamente. raccogliete i più simpatici, quelli che vi conquistano con la loro forma e i loro colori e la loro sottile fragranza. ringraziate e fate il vostro bouquet.

one morning out with a colleague of mine cutting hedges and shrubs, we realized how many welcome plant guests a hedge, even one of only cherry laurel, can hold. so we saved from the lot some weigelia blooming twigs and a bunch of flaxweed and evergreen clematis.

as we got back to our warehouse, I put them in a bowl of cool water, and right then and there, like an extemporary master of flowers in his shop, I arranged them in two bowls and a glass to show my colleagues my point of view. to share with them a vision of beauty. weeds rising to the top.
